250+ Game Name Ideas for Indie and Video Games (2026)

Need game name ideas that players can search, say, and remember? This guide lists 250+ original video game titles by genre, plus Steam and store rules and a shortlist process before you ship.

You have a game. Maybe it is a jam build still named Untitled_05, or a Steam page waiting on capsule art. Either way, you still need a title people can search, say in a Discord call, and remember after they close the store.

This page is a working set of game name ideas, grouped by genre, plus the store rules that actually constrain the title, and a short process for how to name a game without pretending a listing is clear.

What makes a good game name

A good game title fits the genre in one glance, holds up when someone says it out loud, and still looks like a game when it is six pixels tall on a capsule. It also has to clear store policy and leave you room to own the brand.

Use this filter before you fall in love with a clever spelling:

  • Short. One to three words when you can. If it wraps off the capsule, it is already too long for daily use.
  • Sayable. Read it out loud. If you hesitate, other people will too, including the friend trying to recommend it in voice chat.
  • Spellable. If you have to say "that is with a y, not an i," the search is already leaking.
  • Store-legal. Mobile listings have a 30-character name field. Steam does not publish a complete length spec, so keep the title readable in search and in the library.
  • Ownable. You can live with it after the joke fades, and you can defend it in a trademark search.

Catchy game names are not the same as keyword piles. "Best Free Zombie Shooter Game 2026" is descriptive. It is also hard to love, hard to say, and easy for a store reviewer to treat as stuffing.

Unique game titles leave a little mystery. The capsule, the subtitle (if you use one), and the first ten minutes finish the sentence.

How to brainstorm game name ideas

Start with the loop, not a mood board. Write one sentence a player would text a friend: "I kept dying in a greenhouse that locks itself at dusk." Circle the words you would actually say. Those words are better raw material than a synonym dump.

Then run four patterns on that sentence.

Real word, new context. Take a plain word that does not describe software and drop it on this game. Harbor for a stealth title. The mismatch is the brand. People remember the surprise more than a literal label.

Invented word. Blend two sounds you already circled. Ember plus wake becomes Emberwake. Say it once. If someone asks you to spell it on a stream, it is trying too hard.

Compound. Glue two short words. Millwatch. Ridgeline. If it looks like an internal feature flag (ZombieSyncPro), cut it. Compounds work when both halves are words a person already knows.

Phrase of the loop. Again the Same Door. Carry the Last Lantern. This is the easiest pattern to overload with keywords. One thought is enough. "SurviveZombieShooterOpenWorld" is four ideas fighting in a search box.

A practical loop: write 40 titles in 20 minutes, star 10, then walk away. The next morning, say the 10 to someone who was not in the brainstorm. Keep the ones they can repeat back without looking at your list.

Unique game titles usually come from that second pass, not from the first clever line in a generator.

Steam, App Store, and Google Play naming rules

Storefronts treat the title as a tight field, not a slogan. The public specs are not the same on every store, so do not invent a single global character cap.

Steamworks documents where the name lives, not how long it may be. The Changing Your Game's Name page does not publish a complete length spec. Do not invent one. Your game's name is defined in three main locations: Store info on the Basic Info tab (used in the Steam store, including search results), Steamworks Info on the General Application Settings tab (used in the library and the Steam Community), and Package Info for each store package that sells the game (the purchase option on the store page and at checkout). Keep those three strings aligned so a player does not buy one label and install another.

You can change the name of your game within Steamworks at any time until your store page has been through the pre-release review process. After that, Steamworks says you will not be able to change the name unless you have unlocked Profile Features. If you still need a change, or you need localized versions, Steamworks says to reach out in advance with the game you are changing and the names you want. The store page editing docs repeat the same lock: the name cannot be changed once the game has been through pre-release review.

You can provide localizations for the game name. In General Application Settings, a localized name for a language displays to customers who run Steam in that language. If you set localized names there, they override the store page name for that language so the store and the library match. The localized name is used for search suggestions in that language. The base name is the fallback. Localizing the name is subject to the same change limits as the base name.

Google Play uses the same App name field for apps and for games. Play Console Help sets that field at a 30 character limit, with one localized name per language. The short description is 80 characters. The full description is 4,000 characters. Those limits apply to full-width and half-width characters. Play also warns that repetitive or irrelevant keywords in the name, description, or promotional description can create a poor experience and can get an app suspended.

Google's metadata policy is specific. Do not use emojis, emoticons, or repeated special characters in the title, icon, or developer name. Avoid ALL CAPS unless that is the brand. Do not put ranking claims, price promotions, or Play-program badges in the title ("#1," "App of the year," "10% off," "Editor's choice"). Do not use deceptive claims such as "best game ever."

Apple's App Store Connect Help documents the App Store name as at least two characters and no more than 30 characters. You can edit it until you submit the app to App Review. Later, you can change the name when you create a new version, or when the version status permits editing. The subtitle is a separate field that cannot be longer than 30 characters. Treat 30 characters as the shared mobile listing cap. Do not pad the name because a blog claimed the title is worth extra in store search. That kind of multiplier is not in the official help pages cited here.

A clean pattern is brand plus an optional clarifying word, if it still fits: "Emberwake" or "Emberwake Roguelike." Put extra keywords in the short description (Play) or the subtitle (App Store), not in a stuffed title. On Steam, keep extra pitch in the description, not in a second unofficial name that drifts from the library string.

Package names, bundle IDs, and Steam app IDs are unique technical IDs. The visible store title is not the same thing. Two listings can look similar to a shopper even when the backend IDs differ, which is why you still search the stores by hand.

Copyright is a different tool. The U.S. Copyright Office FAQ is blunt: copyright does not protect names, titles, slogans, or short phrases. Circular 33 repeats that titles and short phrases lack the authorship copyright requires. Two games can share a title. That is not a green light to copy a famous series name. Series names and brands may still be trademarks.

For the United States, start at the USPTO trademark search. Search your own market too. A quiet result is not legal advice, and it is not a green light to ship. USPTO search is a check, never clearance.

250+ game name ideas by category

These lists mix short invented brands and clear phrases. They are sparks, not a clearance report. Search Steam, itch.io, App Store, Google Play, domains, social handles, and trademarks before you commit. None of these names is a claim that a title is available.

How to check a shortlist

Pick five titles you would not mind saying for the next five years. Then run the same checks on each one.

  1. Say it out loud. Record a 10-second voice note. Play it back. If you flinch, drop it.
  2. Run the store-field test. If you ship on Google Play or the App Store, type the exact listing you want, including spaces. If it overflows 30 characters, it is not a legal mobile store name in that form. Steam does not publish a complete length spec. Still paste the title onto a capsule mock and into a search bar. If it truncates into mush, cut words.
  3. Search Steam, itch.io, App Store, and Google Play for collisions. Look at exact matches and near-spellings in your genre. A similar capsule plus a similar title is a real problem even if the strings are not identical.
  4. Check domain and social handles. A missing .com is not an automatic no. A confusing handle on the platform your players already live on is worse. Do not treat a registrar search as proof the brand is free.
  5. Search trademarks. For the United States, start at the USPTO trademark search. Search your own market too. A quiet result is not legal advice, and it is not a green light to ship.

If two titles survive, pick the one a stranger spelled correctly. Pretty spelling is optional. Being found is not.

Common mistakes when you name a game

Keyword stuffing. "Best Free Zombie Shooter Game 2026" wastes the mobile 30-character field, reads like an ad, and can trip Play's metadata rules. Put the pitch in the description.

Copying a competitor. A one-letter swap on a known title trains people to download the other game. It also invites a trademark fight you do not want in month three.

Unpronounceable spellings. Xyphra, Qnlyt, and stacked consonants look unique in a spreadsheet. They die in a podcast mention. If you have to invent a pronunciation guide, the title is doing extra work the game should do.

Locking a joke name. Inside jokes fade. "NopeNotDarkSouls" is funny on jam night and awkward when you sell the page to a publisher. Save the joke for an achievement.

Treating the generator as a lawyer. A list, including this one, cannot tell you a title is clear. Only searches, and often a lawyer, can. Copyright will not save you, because titles are not copyrightable. Trademark search is the tool that actually matters for a series or a brand.

Pick five names and run the checks

You do not need a perfect title. You need a title you can say, spell, fit in 30 characters if you ship mobile, and defend after a store search and a trademark search.

Star five from the lists above, run the checks, and ship. If you are naming a gaming YouTube channel instead of a game title, see the related list of gaming YouTube channel name ideas.

A good title still needs a game that holds up. The trailer, the capsule, and the first ten minutes do the rest of the work.

FAQs About Game Name Ideas

How do I come up with game name ideas?

Write the loop in one spoken sentence, circle the words you would actually say, then force those words through four patterns: a real word in a new context, an invented blend, a two-word compound, and a phrase of the loop. Generate more than you need, sleep on a shortlist of 10, and keep the titles a friend can repeat without looking at your notes.

How long should a game title be?

If you ship on Google Play or the App Store, plan for 30 characters or fewer. That is the Google Play app name limit and the App Store name cap documented by Apple (minimum two characters, maximum 30). Shorter is easier under an icon. One to three words is the practical range. Use the short description or subtitle for extra context. Steamworks does not publish a complete character-limit spec on the Changing Your Game's Name page, so do not invent a Steam cap. Keep the Steam title short enough to read in search, in the library, and on a capsule.

Can two games have the same name?

They can look the same to a shopper. Stores identify builds with unique technical IDs, but the visible listing name is a separate field. The U.S. Copyright Office does not protect names, titles, slogans, or short phrases. Similar names in the same genre still create confusion, support tickets, and trademark risk. Search Steam, itch.io, and the mobile stores, then search trademarks. Do not assume a title is available because it appeared on a blog list.

Can I change a game name after it is listed?

It depends on the store, and it is not a quiet cosmetic edit everywhere. On Steam, you can change the name until the store page has been through pre-release review. After that, Steamworks says you cannot change it unless you have unlocked Profile Features, and to contact them in advance with the current name and the names you want. On the App Store, you can edit the name until you submit to App Review, then change it later by creating a new version (or when the version status allows). Play Console says you can change the Google Play name later. Align the new string across Steam's three name fields, the mobile listing, and the capsule so players are not hunting two brands.

Do I need a .com?

No. A .com is nice when you can get a clean one. It is not a requirement for shipping. Many games use another TLD, or a small prefix, when the exact .com is not realistic. Consistency across the store listing, the site, and the social handle matters more than winning a specific TLD. Never treat a "domain available" badge as a brand clearance.
