You have an app. Maybe it is a notes tool you built on weekends, or a delivery product with a real backlog. Either way, you still need a name people can search, say in a group chat, and remember after they close the store listing.
This page is a working set of app name ideas, grouped by category, plus the store rules that actually constrain the name, and a short process for how to name an app without pretending a domain is free.
What makes a good app name
A good app store name is short enough to fit under an icon, easy to say on a call, and easy to spell when someone only heard it once. It also has to clear store policy and leave you room to own the brand.
Use this filter before you fall in love with a clever spelling:
- Short. One to three words. If it wraps under the icon, it is already too long for daily use.
- Sayable. Read it out loud. If you hesitate, other people will too.
- Spellable. If you have to say “that is with a y, not an i,” the search is already leaking.
- Store-legal. It must fit the 30-character store name field and skip promotional claims.
- Ownable. You can live with it after the joke fades, and you can defend it in a trademark search.
Catchy app names are not the same as keyword piles. “Best Free Invoice Tracker App 2026” is descriptive. It is also hard to love, hard to say, and easy for a store reviewer to treat as stuffing.
Brandable app names leave a little mystery. Slack does not describe chat. Notion does not describe docs. You still need a subtitle, a short description, and screenshots to finish the sentence.
How to brainstorm app name ideas
Start with the job, not a mood board. Write one sentence a user would text a friend: “I use it to split dinner with four people before the check hits the table.” Circle the words you would actually say. Those words are better raw material than a synonym dump.
Then run four patterns on that sentence.
Real word, new context. Take a plain word that does not describe software and drop it on this product. Harbor for a notes app. The mismatch is the brand. People remember the surprise more than a literal label.
Invented word. Blend two sounds you already circled. Note plus nook becomes Notenook. Say it once. If someone asks you to spell it on a Zoom call, it is trying too hard.
Compound. Glue two short words. Tasknook. Spendrail. If it looks like an internal feature flag (InvoiceSyncPro), cut it. Compounds work when both halves are words a person already knows.
Verb plus noun. CatchNote. SplitBill. This is the easiest pattern to overload with keywords. One verb is enough. “ManageTrackInvoiceApp” is four ideas fighting in 30 characters.
A practical loop: write 40 names in 20 minutes, star 10, then walk away. The next morning, say the 10 to someone who was not in the brainstorm. Keep the ones they can repeat back without looking at your list.
Unique app names usually come from that second pass, not from the first clever line in a generator.
App Store and Google Play naming rules
Both major stores treat the listing name as a tight field, not a slogan.
Google Play’s app name field has a 30 character limit. The short description is 80 characters. The full description is 4,000 characters. Play Console Help also warns that repetitive or irrelevant keywords in the name, description, or promotional description can create a poor experience and can get an app suspended.
Google’s metadata policy is specific. Do not use emojis, emoticons, or repeated special characters in the title, icon, or developer name. Avoid ALL CAPS unless that is the brand. Do not put ranking claims, price promotions, or Play-program badges in the title (“#1,” “App of the year,” “10% off,” “Editor’s choice”).
Apple’s App Store Connect Help documents the App Store name as at least two characters and no more than 30 characters. The subtitle is a separate 30-character field. Treat 30 characters as the shared store-listing cap used with Google Play’s published 30-character rule. Do not pad the name because a blog claimed the title is worth 2x or 3x in ASO. That kind of multiplier is not in the official help pages cited here.
A clean pattern is brand plus an optional clarifying word, if it still fits: “Nudora” or “Nudora Notes.” Put extra keywords in the short description (Play) or the subtitle (App Store), not in a stuffed title.
Package names and bundle IDs are unique technical IDs. The visible app store name is not the same thing. Two listings can look similar to a shopper even when the backend IDs differ, which is why you still search the stores by hand.
250+ app name ideas by category
These lists mix short invented brands and clear compounds. They are sparks, not a clearance report. Search App Store, Google Play, domains, social handles, and trademarks before you commit. None of these names is a claim that a name is available.

How to check a shortlist
Pick five names you would not mind saying for the next five years. Then run the same checks on each one.
- Say it out loud. Record a 10-second voice note. Play it back. If you flinch, drop it.
- Run the 30-character test. Type the exact listing you want, including spaces. If it overflows, it is not a legal store name in that form.
- Search App Store and Google Play for collisions. Look at exact matches and near-spellings in your category. A similar icon plus a similar name is a real problem even if the strings are not identical.
- Check domain and social handles. A missing .com is not an automatic no. A confusing handle on the platform your users already live on is worse. Do not treat a registrar search as proof the brand is free.
- Search trademarks. For the United States, start at the USPTO trademark search. Search your own market too. A quiet result is not legal advice, and it is not a green light to ship.
If two names survive, pick the one a stranger spelled correctly. Pretty spelling is optional. Being found is not.
Common mistakes when you name an app
Keyword stuffing. “Best AI Photo Editor App Free” wastes the 30-character field, reads like an ad, and can trip Play’s metadata rules. Put the pitch in the description.
Copying a competitor. A one-letter swap on a known brand trains people to download the other app. It also invites a trademark fight you do not want in month three.
Unpronounceable spellings. Xyphra, Qnlyt, and stacked consonants look unique in a spreadsheet. They die in a podcast mention. If you have to invent a pronunciation guide, the name is doing extra work the product should do.
Locking a joke name. Inside jokes fade. “NopeNotExcel” is funny on launch day and awkward when you sell to finance teams. Save the joke for an onboarding screen.
Treating the generator as a lawyer. A list, including this one, cannot tell you a name is clear. Only searches, and often a lawyer, can.
Pick five names and run the checks
You do not need a perfect name. You need a name you can say, spell, list in 30 characters, and defend after a store search and a trademark search.
Star five from the lists above, run the checks, and ship. If you are naming a YouTube channel instead of an app, see the related list of music YouTube channel name ideas.
A good name still needs content that ranks. The listing, the screenshots, and the page people land on after they tap through do the rest of the work.
FAQs
How do I come up with app name ideas?
Write the job in one spoken sentence, circle the words you would actually say, then force those words through four patterns: a real word in a new context, an invented blend, a two-word compound, and a verb plus noun. Generate more than you need, sleep on a shortlist of 10, and keep the names a friend can repeat without looking at your notes.
How long should an app name be?
Plan for 30 characters or fewer. That is the Google Play app name limit and the App Store name cap documented by Apple (minimum two characters, maximum 30). Shorter is easier on a home screen. One to three words is the practical range. Use the short description or subtitle for extra context.
Can two apps have the same name?
They can look the same to a shopper. Stores identify builds with unique technical IDs, but the visible listing name is a separate field. Similar names in the same category create confusion, support tickets, and trademark risk. Search both stores, then search trademarks. Do not assume a name is available because it appeared on a blog list.
Do I need a .com?
No. A .com is nice when you can get a clean one. It is not a requirement for shipping. Many apps use .app or another TLD, or a small prefix, when the exact .com is not realistic. Consistency across the store listing, the site, and the social handle matters more than winning a specific TLD. Never treat a “domain available” badge as a brand clearance.
Should the name include “app”?
Usually no. People already know they are in a store. The word “app” burns characters you may want for the brand. Add it only if the leftover word is confusing without it, and only if you still fit in 30 characters.
